4. Resource Description

   The ABI 3130xl Genetic Analyzers is basically an upgraded 3100 with a pump system instead of syringes which allows it to run Pop7 as well as Pop6. Polymer 7 can be run on the 50cm array and gives sequence reads up to about 900+bp instead of only 500-700bp that are possible with Pop6. This means it can collect longer sequences in the same amount of time using a similar amount of polymer per sample. The 80cm array on the other hand takes twice as long and uses twice the polymer for only 800-1000+ bases.
