"Mat directs the Alaska Stable Isotope Facility and is a faculty member with the Water and Environmental Research Center and the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at UAF. His research focuses on applications of stable isotope techniques to various past and present ecological systems. By including a better understanding how modern environments function he hopes to appreciate how the past operated. A better understanding of past biotic responses to global change will encourage rigorous testing of environmental models, allowing future environmental scenarios to be assessed. Projects and research interests include: Stable isotope analyses of past marine mammals as indicators of past environments; stable isotope analyses as a method of tracking the past movements of animals; stable isotope analyses as a method of examining nutrient and trophic dynamics and reconstructing past environments in East Africa, Iceland, Alaska and Belize."
